Flora

There are some incredible plants in the southwest. This is just a sampling of those plants a few scattered in there from other places I've traveled.

  • Joshua's Bedtime

    Joshua's Bedtime

This was taken at the northern most Joshua tree grove in the U.S. just outside of St. George, Utah. Less is more sometimes, and in the case of silhouettes, that principle is especially true. I love how the sunset contrasts the black outline of the Joshua trees.

  • A Golden Frame

    A Golden Frame

The gold colors of fall are worth the drive up into the Kolob Terrace section of Zion National Park. These quaking aspens were mesmerizing to look up through.

  • Llama Tree

    Llama Tree

Southern Utah plays home to a wide variety of plant life but the Joshua Tree has been one of the more interesting subjects to shoot. Each one is different.

  • Voilent Blossom

    Voilent Blossom

I was out in Snow Canyon to shoot a horseback ride but the light was so interesting on these cactus blossoms I forgot completely why I was there. I regret nothing.

  • Golden Joshua

    Golden Joshua

Golden hour among a huge grove of Joshua trees. A perfect, peaceful moment to remember and enjoy. These remote areas of the desert in Southern Utah are quiet pieces of solitude.

  • Flaming Bush

    Flaming Bush

This shot was taken at sunset out in the Joshua Tree Natural National Landmark. It looked to me as though this was a burning bush frozen in place.

  • Cactus Brain

    Cactus Brain

I enjoy seeing something more in nature. This cactus is located just outside of Red Cliff Recreation Area and immediately reminded me of brain.

Up on Observation Point you get the highest view of the park even above Angel's Landing. It was just luck that the spring blossoms where blooming.

  • A Mouses View

    A Mouses View

Have you ever wondered how the fall colors look from the vantage point of a mouse? Changing perspectives in photography is an important thing to remember. It keeps life interesting.

  • Defying the Odds

    Defying the Odds

It's tough to survive in the desert but this wildflower feels like its doing more than just surviving, it's thriving. There's a lesson there for us all. I love this image for the contrast between the orange sand and the white flower petals.

  • Where's Waldo's Horse

    Where's Waldo's Horse

This picture was a call back to childhood joys like "I Spy" and "Where's Waldo". The horse so closely resembled the quaking aspens it was tough to see he was there.

  • Defensive Beauty

    Defensive Beauty

If you want this pollen you'll have to earn it. I've been stuck more than a few times out in the desert of southern Utah while photographing its landscape. Nature is beautiful but it can be violent too.

  • Close From Far

    Close From Far

For a couple of weeks each spring the desert comes alive with wild flowers like these yellow daisies. It's an engaging tactic to zoom in on an interesting object while having an equally interesting foreground thrown out of focus.

  • Trails to Nowhere

    Trails to Nowhere

Some shots don't need a strong compelling subject. I felt like these sporadic, zig zagging trails among sage brush offered an interesting abstract image. The randomness of it just felt compelling enough it needed saved in a picture.
