Spring Break on the Oregon Coast

Getting out and taking pictures can be the single biggest hurdle to getting the amazing shots you want. At least that is what I’ve found to be true for me. I have a blackbelt in making up excuses and justifying myself not grabbing my camera and getting new photos. Even when I do get out and do something, there can be ways to justify not taking the time and effort to take pictures. I usually fail to get anything shot when I go out with my wife and kids. There’s always so much going on and I feel like my attention is being pulled in too many directions to focus on getting great photos.

That being said, I did do a decent job fighting against my natural flaw. I kept the camera on-hand most of the trip and didn’t hesitate to pull it up and snap shots at lots of opportunities. I never got the perfect setup of lighting and setting, but the location and subject matter was great, and I had a wonderful time taking photos of the rocky Oregon coast. It’s a beautiful place that is brimming with photo opportunities.

Another plus side that I won’t be sharing here is that by pushing myself to take advantage of opportunities while out with my family, I got some really good photos of the kids. That won’t help me establish myself any further as a landscape photographer, but it’s a great bonus that will make my wife and I happy to have.

This was a memorable spring break that was an incredible pairing of wild coast and rocks to tall mountains. It’s oddly reminiscent of my visit to Kauai. Not a one-for-one comparison, but there’s something similar here. I’m already dreaming of another opportunity to come back and dive even deeper into this region. There’s so much to see along this coastline and so many opportunities I haven’t even scratched the surface of it.

It doesn’t really matter if I’m on a family trip or out solo with the dedicated purpose of taking epic landscape photographs. As long as I’m willing to put in the effort and make time for my passion, there will be quality opportunities and, hopefully, quality photos.
